By Car:

We rented a car and drove from Zagreb. A 2 to 2.5-hour journey with mostly tree-lined roads. As you get closer, the water peeks through in glints of that stunning blue-green color.

Important tip from a local: Obey the speed limits strictly. In Croatia, if you’re pulled over, officers may ask for payment on the spot. This isn’t a scam…it’s actually standard practice in some cases.

By Bus:

Buses run regularly from Zagreb, Zadar, Split, and other cities. FlixBus is a reliable option. The ride takes 2 to 3.5 hours depending on where you’re coming from.

What to Bring When Visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park

  • Refillable water bottle
  • Snacks (options are limited inside the park)
  • Sturdy shoes or hiking sandals
  • Sunscreen & hat
  • Lightweight rain jacket (weather can shift quickly)

We stopped at a nearby market/bar combo for snacks before entering, but it was very local, and not exactly welcoming to tourists. We got what we needed and moved on quickly.

Unique Experiences at Plitvice Lakes National Park

There are moments in travel that make you stop and feel something indescribable. For us, that was canoeing on a lake with waterfalls pouring down around us and a curious duck floating by. It’s a good idea to bring someone that can do all of the paddling.

Later, we hiked up to a bat cave and reached a lookout point that revealed the entire valley of waterfalls. The exact spot from our desktop wallpaper all those years ago. It was emotional. It was magic. And yeah, I felt like batman.

Best Time to Visit Plitvice Lakes National Park (Avoid the Crowds)

Plitvice Lakes National Park is stunning year-round, but when you visit can completely change your experience. Water levels, crowds, and even the color of the lakes shift with the seasons, so choosing the right time matters.

Late spring (May to early June) is hands-down one of the best times to visit Plitvice Lakes. Snowmelt feeds the waterfalls, making them especially powerful, the lakes glow that unreal turquoise color, and crowds are still manageable compared to peak summer. The weather is mild, perfect for walking the wooden trails without feeling rushed or overheated.

Summer (late June through August) is the busiest and most expensive time to visit. This is when Plitvice Lakes sees the highest visitor numbers, especially between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. If summer is your only option, arrive as early as possible, ideally at opening time, or visit later in the afternoon when tour buses begin to leave. Expect warmer temperatures, packed boardwalks, and less opportunity to linger.

Early fall (September to October) is another excellent time to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park. Crowds thin out significantly after August, ticket prices drop, and the forests begin to change color. Water levels remain strong in September, and October brings golden leaves that add a completely different kind of magic to the park.

Winter (November to March) offers the quietest experience, with snow-covered waterfalls and frozen lakes creating a fairytale-like atmosphere. However, some trails and upper sections of the park may be closed for safety, and not all routes are accessible. If you’re visiting in winter, check trail conditions in advance and plan for shorter routes.

Our recommendation:
For the best balance of beautiful water flow, fewer crowds, and comfortable weather, aim for May, early June, or September. These months give you the Plitvice Lakes experience everyone dreams of, without feeling like you’re walking through a theme park.
