Kuta Bali Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Things to Do & Our Honest Experience

Pool and ocean views at Anvaya Beach Resort in Kuta, Bali

Selamat siang from Kuta, Bali!

After spending time exploring the peaceful jungles of Ubud, we made our way south to one of Bali’s most famous beach town…Kuta. Known for its golden beaches, budget shopping, surf culture, and lively nightlife, Kuta is often one of the first stops travelers make when visiting Bali.

But is Kuta actually worth visiting?

After spending five relaxing days here, I have some thoughts…and a few stories.

In this Kuta Bali travel guide, I’m sharing our honest experience visiting the area, including where to stay, things to do Kuta Bali, and hopefully answer the big question…is Kuta Bali worth visiting?

Bali is suprisingly affordable especially compared to other beach destinations. If you’re curious what things actually cost, I break it all down in my guide Is Bali Expensive.

How to Get to Kuta Bali

Kuta is located on the southwest coast of Bali, about 15 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport (also known as Denpasar International Airport / DPS). Its location makes it one of the most convenient places to stay when arriving in Bali.

The drive from Ubud to Kuta took us about an hour and was surprisingly scenic. We crossed the Bali Mandara Toll Road, which stretches over the bright blue waters of the Benoa Gulf. Driving across a bridge suspended over the ocean is both beautiful and mildly terrifying.

Along the way we also caught a glimpse of the towering Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue watching over the city. It’s one of the tallest statues in the world and definitely a sight you won’t miss.

Here are the best ways to get to Kuta:

  • Taxi or Grab: The easiest option. Expect to pay around $5–$10 USD depending on traffic.
  • Hotel transfer: Many hotels (including
The Anvaya Beach Resort Bali) offer airport pickup.
  • Private driver: A great option if you plan to explore more of Bali.

If you’re coming from Ubud like we were, the drive takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.

Best Time to Visit Kuta Bali

The best time to visit Kuta depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

  • Dry season (May–October):
This is the best time for sunny days, beach time, and water activities. It’s also peak tourist season, so expect bigger crowds.
  • Rainy season (November–April):
You’ll experience more humidity and occasional heavy rain, but also fewer tourists and lower prices.

We visited during a transitional period and still had plenty of sunshine, with just a few unpredictable moments (including an earthquake… keep reading.)

Where To Stay in Kuta Bali: Anvaya Beach Resort

Wondering where to stay in Kuta? There are a TON of options, but if you are traveling on a budget but also wanting to live a luxurious lifestyle, I have the perfect places for you.

We checked into the stunning Anvaya Beach Resort Bali, and honestly…this hotel might have been one of the highlights of the entire trip.

After nearly two months of nonstop travel, we desperately needed a place to slow down, sleep in, and recharge.

This resort delivered.

We booked a deluxe lagoon access room, which meant our balcony opened directly onto a swimming pool. Yes. An actual pool.

Open the door.
Step outside.
Jump into the water.

Naturally, we took advantage of this feature multiple times.

The room itself was spacious with a huge bathroom and a comfortable balcony setup, but the real magic of this property is the atmosphere. The resort has multiple pools, beautiful tropical landscaping, and direct access to the beach.

But honestly… when you can roll out of bed and straight into the water, why bother walking to another pool?

Being an all inclusive hotel, I thought it would cost us our life savings. Turns out it was so much cheaper than I could have imagined. Check out all the details on Anvaya Resort here!

Poolside Drinks & Bao Bun Obsessions

The main pool in the center of the resort quickly became our favorite hangout spot.

Servers constantly circulate with trays of tropical drinks, and the all-day dining restaurant serves surprisingly good food for a poolside setup.

This is also where we discovered something life-changing.

Bao buns.

Soft, fluffy, pillowy little buns filled with deliciousness. We probably ordered them three to five times a day without shame.

And then there was the drink.

The Pandan Paradise.

A bright green cocktail that tasted like a vanilla-infused piña colada dream. I genuinely lost count of how many we drank.

Vacation calories don’t count, right?

Things to Do in Kuta Bali

No Kuta Bali travel guide would be complete without mentioning the beach.

The resort sits directly beside Kuta Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Bali.

Kuta Beach is famous for:

  • Long sandy shoreline
  • Beginner surf waves
  • Epic sunsets
  • Beachfront restaurants and bars

The water was a little colder than we expected, but the beach itself is lively and full of activity.

While walking along the sand we were approached by a local offering parasailing, jet skis, and other water sports. At first we politely declined.

Then he kept lowering the price.

And lowering it.

And lowering it.

Eventually the deal became too good to pass up.

You will come across a lot of these situations while in Kuta. Always check ratings, ask hotel staff for their recommendations, and always trust your gut.

Parasailing Over Bali

The next day we were picked up directly from our hotel and headed out for some ocean adventures.

Originally we hoped to go snorkeling or scuba diving, but an earthquake earlier in the week had stirred up the sand and visibility was terrible.

So instead we went with jet skiing and parasailing.

The waves were big and choppy, and I got tossed around on the jet ski, but it was still super fun. But parasailing turned out to be surprisingly peaceful.

Up in the air, floating quietly above the ocean, looking out over Bali’s coastline… those are the moments where travel really sinks in.

Also the moments where I crush my husband’s hand out of mild terror.

Worth it though.

Shopping in Kuta Bali

Outside the resort, the streets of Kuta are packed with shops, restaurants, and market stalls.

If you’re looking for cheap souvenirs, this is the place.

Rows of local vendors sell everything from:

  • clothing
  • handbags
  • magnets
  • shoes
  • artwork
  • sunglasses

And yes, plenty of knock-off designer brands.

We even bought a “Louis Vuitton” suitcase for about $5 USD just to carry souvenirs home.

By the time we finished shopping we had filled an entire suitcase with clothes, gifts, and random treasures for around $20 total.

Budget travelers, take note.

A Few Unexpected Travel Moments in Kuta

During our five-day stay we experienced two unexpected events.

The first was a fairly large earthquake. Being from California, I’m used to earthquakes, but experiencing one while staying on an island in the middle of the ocean definitely hits a little differently.

Thankfully the hotel called our room shortly afterward to make sure guests were safe.

The second incident happened on our final day when Seth slipped on a wet marble floor in the lobby and hit his head pretty hard.

It was scary in the moment, but thankfully he recovered quickly.

Travel always comes with a little unpredictability. Just be mentally prepared.

Our Next Stop: Ayana Resort Bali

After five relaxing days in Kuta, we headed about 30 minutes south to Jimbaran to stay at the stunning AYANA Resort Bali.

This property is famous for its cliffside bar:

Rock Bar Bali

The resort was definitely a splurge for us, but since we had stayed under budget for most of the trip, we decided to treat ourselves.

Upon arrival we were greeted with flowers and a welcome drink. I think this should become standard for arriving home too.

The Rock Bar Experience

To reach Rock Bar you descend down the cliff in a funicular elevator.

For someone who is mildly terrified of elevators… this was an adventure.

The view at the bottom is incredible though. Waves crash against the rocks while the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

The drinks were fantastic.

The food? Beautifully presented… but just okay.

Still, the atmosphere alone makes it worth visiting.

Kuta Bali Travel Tips (What to Know Before You Go)

No Kuta Bali Travel Guide is complete without some travel tips. Before visiting Kuta, here are a few things we learned that will make your trip smoother:

  • Watch for traffic:
The streets in Kuta can get very congested, especially near the beach.
  • Be prepared to bargain:
Shopping in Kuta is fun, but prices are rarely fixed. Don’t be afraid to negotiate.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings:
Kuta is generally safe, but like any busy tourist area, keep an eye on your belongings.
  • Be cautious with wet surfaces:
Marble floors + water = slippery (learned this the hard way).

Use sunscreen and stay hydrated:
The Bali sun is strong, even on cloudy days.

Is Kuta Bali Worth Visiting? Final Thoughts From This Kuta Bali Travel Guide

If I had to choose between the two resorts we stayed at, I would absolutely return to
The Anvaya Beach Resort Bali.

It was:

  • more affordable
  • had better food
  • located close to shops and restaurants
  • and felt more connected to the city

While AYANA Resort Bali is breathtaking, it’s very isolated

If you want to explore local streets, markets, and restaurants, Kuta is a much better base.

Final Thoughts on Kuta, Bali

Kuta might not be the quietest or most peaceful part of Bali, but it has a certain energy that makes it fun.

Between the beach sunsets, cheap shopping, great resorts, and unforgettable experiences, it’s a place that leaves a strong impression.

I would absolutely come back.

Preferably once someone invents teleportation so I don’t have to sit through a 20-hour flight.

I hope this Kuta Bali travel guide helps you show up with more preparedness and confidence than we had!
