Buon Pomeriggio from Pisa, Italy!
We arrived in Pisa, Italy after a 4 hour train ride from Rome. The Italian countryside is breathtaking. I was planning on getting in a nap on the ride over, but I couldn’t stop staring out the window. Vineyards and small towns dotted the green hills. Every day has been a dream, and I am not ready to wake up.
We are here for one reason, and that is to see the Leaning Tower! (also known as the Campanile) We made this a few hour pit stop on the way to our next destination. The tower is a 10 minute walk from the train station, so we knew we could see and do all of the things while waiting for our next train. There are a few restaurants as you exit the train station, so this was the perfect opportunity to stop and eat! We had raviolis and a basket of bread. Before we came to Italy, if someone told me a big ol’ plate of raviolis is what was for lunch, I would have laughed and laughed my way out of there. How is someone supposed to function after a heavy meal? But there is something different about it being here. It didn’t make me feel too full and tired. It gave me a little pick me up. The sauce is light, and the fillings are not overflowing like most American raviolis. Portion control is a wonderful thing my friends.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
We walked down the street, and as soon as you turn the corner, there she is! We walked up towards it, and it leaned a whole lot more than I expected! It honestly feels like something should be holding it up. I cannot believe this thing is still standing! You can pay to go inside and walk up the tower, but we did not due to the size of the line and our time frame here. It is located in the Piazza del Duomo and is not the only building here. This was news to me. It is surrounded by the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistery, and the Campo Santo. The architecture is so perfect, so detailed. The Baptistery is a big beautiful round building, and free to enter. It is a good place to go in and cool off. The area is surrounded by lush green grass, the perfect spot for a picnic or reading a book, which a lot of people were doing. I love looking around and seeing a bunch of people sprawled out on blankets, eating food and drinking wine, in the middle of the day. These are my kind of people.
We laid down in the grass for a while, staring up at the tower and the beautiful blue sky, reminiscing about where we’ve been and where we’re going. We are so lucky to be on this adventure together. The entire trip we found ourselves wishing our families were here. Every place we went we could picture someone we knew just falling in love in the city, the food, or just the whole vibe of the place. One day we will bring them back with us, but until then they will just have to really use their imagination while reading this.
We made our way back to the train station, and patiently awaited our next train. Italy has already been so magical. I can’t wait to see what the rest of it has in store for us.
Come explore Florence with us!..
