Welcome to St. Gallen, Switzerland — affectionately called Sternenstadt, or City of Stars, thanks to over 700 glowing stars illuminating the historic heart of the city during the holidays. These glowing stars aren’t just beautiful, they set the stage for what is arguably one of the most charming and atmospheric Christmas markets in Europe.
This festive market is set against the backdrop of a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Abbey of St. Gall, home to a stunning Baroque cathedral and one of the world’s oldest libraries. Yes, it’s every bit as magical as it sounds.

Roughly 70 artisan stalls line the cobbled streets from Waaghaus to the Bohl and Marktplatz, selling everything from handcrafted wooden toys and hand-poured candles to festive home decor, woolen goods, and gourmet treats. Whether you’re gift shopping or just browsing, you’ll find high-quality, locally made treasures.
There are also permanent shops and boutiques in St. Gallen’s old town, many of which decorate their windows and offer special seasonal items, so it’s worth budgeting time for both the market and the surrounding shops.
Expect high quality food at a Swiss Christmas Market. Everything we tried was delicious and perfectly cooked. There are a lot of similar options as other European Christmas markets, but things tasted more refined.

Driving to the market? You’re in luck — St. Gallen is incredibly accessible. Here’s where to park:
Important: If you’re driving into Switzerland from another country, don’t forget to purchase a vignette (motorway toll sticker) before hitting the highway. Make sure to have your vignette visible—drivers without one risk a fine.
Prefer public transport? St. Gallen’s train station is a 5- to 10-minute walk from the market, making train travel a breeze.
Absolutely. The atmosphere is pure magic, the food is outstanding, and the town itself is something out of a storybook. It’s perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers looking to soak in holiday spirit without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds of some larger European markets.
