Guten Tag from Vienna, Austria!
We woke up in Budapest and caught a 2.5 hour train to Wien HBF, Vienna,Austria. We had almost 6 hours here before we got on to our next, and final, overnight train of the trip! This is a great way to get a sneak peek at a new country. Planning this trip, every train, every stop, was so meticulous. Navigating the Eurorail can be very difficult. Seth spent many hours pulling his hair out and cursing at the phone, but he found much cheaper, yet longer routes that enabled us to see a few more countries in between our “must see” places. I am so grateful for him doing this. It has added more countries onto both of our bucket lists.
Wien HBF Station
Most train stations in Europe have lockers you can rent daily to store your luggage, but please look up each station before planning on it! We paid 5 euros to store our bags and off we went. This was a very clean and updated train station. As soon as we exited the station, we were met with these beautiful pastel colored buildings. So Austrian. The weather was perfect. Sunny, warm, not so humid. It smelled nice outside. Clean. The people here were very eclectic. A mix of all sorts of people mingling with each other. It was refreshing. The whole atmosphere, the entire aesthetic, is like something out of a staged photo. This isn’t real life. I’m not strolling the streets of Vienna while awaiting a first class overnight train. Is this a Bond movie? Somebody pinch me.
I’ll Eat Everything
And here we are again. I looked at something pretty and it made me hungry. We explored the town for as long as we could until we couldn’t wait to eat any longer! So off in search of food we went. We found a place that was busy and had plenty of outdoor seating. We ordered the Wienerschnitzel vom kalb bratkartoffeln. What a mouth full. It was recommended by the waitress, and it was delicious! We had tried the Vienna style wienerschnitzel while in Germany, so we felt compelled to try it here! Veal pounded thin and lightly breaded, served with potatoes and a lemon wedge. It was delicious. And we ordered a waffle served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. I have a serious sweet tooth, and this cured all of my cravings. The waffle was light and airy, but crispy on the outside, and the ice cream tasted homemade. Every time I smell a waffle now, it brings me back to this moment.
We slowly made our way back to the train station just as the sun was setting. One more look at those pastel buildings, and off we go again.
Our last night train! Where will we wake up tomorrow?…
