Zagreb, Croatia

Zdravo from Zagreb, Croatia!

We arrived in Zagreb, Croatia this morning via our first overnight train! We showered in the Munich train station last night, and these were surprisingly clean showers! 7 euros for a 15 minute hot shower?! I’ll take it. Once we were all clean and ready for bed, we boarded our very first over night train!

We arrived at the Zagreb Glavni Kolod train station early that next morning. Sleeper trains are the way to go! Waking up feeling well rested, we had time to kill before checking into our hotel, so we decided we would just stroll around the town for a while!

But first things first, coffee! Right outside of the train station were some tables and chairs and what looked like a little cafe. Perfect. It was early in the day and it was already getting hot. An iced coffee is exactly what we needed. We’ve learned that the Europeans have got a lot of things right, but iced coffee is not one of those things. All through France and Spain, when we would ask for an iced coffee, it was either a blended espresso, served in an espresso sized to go cup, or an espresso over ice, so you get like two sips before it’s gone.

There were two gentlemen at this little cafe that I believe were the owners. When we ordered, there was some confusion about what we meant by “iced coffee”. They spoke some English, so we tried to explain the best we could using our translator apps and pictures from Google. They eventually said they would give it a try, and we were willing to eat or drink whatever they offered us. The coffees they brought us were the best iced coffees we’d had so far! They ended up sitting near us and chatting with us for a while. I had been a little nervous about coming here. Eastern Europe sounds pretty intimidating, but these two very friendly, warm and welcoming fellows really helped me to relax.

King Tomislav Square

After our morning pick me up, we decided to check out the big, beautiful yellow building that sits right outside the train station. It sits in King Tomislav’s Square, and is an art pavilion. We walked around for a few hours, stopping to sit and enjoy the views.

Finally, we made our way towards our hotel. We are staying at the Palace Hotel, which is this big, grand building, the inside decorated with lush velvets and dark colors. It just screams royalty. But it was also in our price range! Luxury hotel for Motel 6 prices? Sold.

It was at this hotel that we had another one of our top 5 dishes in the world. We ordered a club sandwich that came with little potato wedges that were wrapped in the most crispy bacon. They were heavenly. I am a sucker for crispy bacon, and these were cooked to perfection. We ended up ordering another side because I wasn’t too keen on sharing. This hotel also served breakfast, and it was one of the best hotel breakfasts we had so far. There was a very wide selection, everything seemed very fresh, and there were a lot of employees servicing the stations. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zagreb!
