All About Ulm Christmas Market

The Ulm Christmas Market, also known as the Ulm Weihnachtsmarkt, dates back to the 16th century and takes place every year in front of the Ulm Minster (a Lutheran church), which is the tallest church in the world! Talk about a great background for a Christmas Market! The market has around 100 stalls selling traditional products such as gingerbread, roasted nuts, fruit dolls, ornaments, and the Ulm bratwurst. Ulm is also the birthplace of Albert Einstein!

There is also a Medieval Christmas Market located in Neu-Ulm, in front of the town hall and on Johannesplatz. Here you’ll see people dressed in period costumes, entertainers that are juggling and telling stories, and local handmade goods.

Must-Try Eats at Ulm Christmas Market

This was the first market where we tried a chimney cake, and it was delicious! You get to watch it being made, and your choice of toppings. We went traditional with cinnamon sugar, and it was phenomenal. It’s hot and pulls apart so nicely. It’s the perfect thing to walk around and explore with.

The orange gluhwein was also very tasty, and the first place where we saw this flavor offered. It did kind of taste medicinal, but it was strong and warming.

The most popular food stalls or items we saw people walking around with were roasted nuts, which smelled amazing, sausages, and Flammkuchen – the German take on pizza. Also, the chimney cake stall had a line the entire time we were there!

What to See at Ulm Christmas Market

You can’t miss the church. Literally. It’s massive. It’s stunning to see during the day, but at night with the twinkling Christmas trees out front and the lights all around, it really is a show stopper. There are organ concerts held here that you cannot miss! Make sure to check the official website for dates and times.

The stalls are the best part of the market. The items were all original, and different from the other markets. There are more home goods available such as kitchenware and locally made towels and blankets. All of the vendors here seemed a bit more friendly than the bigger city markets!

The rides for kids were great. Everything looked clean and well kept, and they ran for quite a while! The people running the rides were also friendly and happy to be there.

Is Ulm Christmas Market Worth Visiting?

100% yes. The market had a special feel to it. The stalls were more original than some of the bigger markets, and the atmosphere was festive and fun. Even though it was busy, we felt more relaxed exploring the market. People didn’t seem to be in such a rush.

The town is cute and busier than expected and there are plenty of food options and things to do outside of the market. We will definitely be back for longer next time!
