We were passing through the area and decided to look up if there were any Christmas Markets open. The internet claimed there was one, but it was closed. We decided to stop in town anyways for a quick pit stop and stretch our legs, and found that the market was open! Super glad we stopped. This ended up being a really cute town!

We arrived earlier in the day so there weren’t too many people, which made it easier to shop at the stalls. It was on the smaller side – compared to the major cities – but it was still great. The stalls had more unique items and handmade goods. Some people were hard at work carving out small wooden ornaments or putting together lanterns. Per usual, all of the smells just lure you in. You really don’t need directions to any Christmas market you plan on visiting. Just follow your nose and it will lead you there.
Since we arrived believing the market would be closed, we unfortunately did not arrive hungry. The Regensburg Christmas Market had a great selection of food, and there were items here I hadn’t seen at all the other markets. There were these huge pretzels turned into giant sandwiches, some topped with melted cheese. I wasn’t hungry, but then all of a sudden I was.
We ordered hot chocolate with amaretto, and were overcharged, but it was still delicious! Sometimes that language barrier can be a real struggle.
The roasted nuts, fischspezialitaten, and baumstriezel (or chimney cake) stalls looked the most appetizing. But you cannot miss the gluhwein. The apple and blueberry mulled wines are made locally, and are so good. They are the perfect pairing to this festive drink.
There wasn’t too much happening here in the ride department. We came across a small carousel, very cute, but quite small. Our 4 year old looked like a giant. Here we watched the glassblower for a while and tried to figure out where the delicious smells were coming from!
Exploring the town with its cobblestone streets under twinkling lights was the best part for us.
We are so glad we stumbled upon Regensburg. If it wasn’t for our Epic European Christmas Market Extravaganza, we never would have found this city. The town gives major fairy tale vibes with its pastel colored building and cobblestone streets. I would visit here again any time of year, but hopefully it’s during the Advent season.
