All About Prague Christmas Market

The Christmas Markets, or Vánoční trhy, in Prague, Czechia can be traced back to 1812, right in the Old Town Square. The markets are beautifully decorated and full of locally made goods and Christmas treats.

The main Christmas Markets are held at Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square, which is about a 5 minute walk from each other. The other markets in the area are located at Republic Square, Tyl’s Square, Peace Square, and Smichov. (The dates on these markets do differ). Every year the market has a different theme! They will announce the theme shortly before the market opens.

*Fun Fact: Prague Christmas Markets are eco-friendly! Food and drinks are locally sourced and served with 100% biodegradable plates, straws, and cups. Go Czechia!

Must-Try Eats at Prague Christmas Market

There is no shortage of food options here. Majority of the stalls are selling food. My kind of market! The food here is all locally sourced and made right in front of you. Here are some of the most popular, and most delicious items:

  • Haluski: Potato dumplings served with cabbage, onions, cheese, and bacon. It’s warm, salty, and delicious.
  • Sunka: Ham roasted over a spit. The smell is so wonderful.
  • Grilled Cheese: This is not your average grilled cheese. These are pockets of cheese, served with a garlic sauce or a sweet jam.
  • Trdelník: Also known as Chimney Cakes. Dough that is wrapped around a stick and baked. Topped with sugar (or other various toppings and fillings of your choice)
  • Rybí Polévka: A traditional fish soup cooked in huge pots. Made using local fish, such as carp, cream, and brandy. The steaming hot pots will draw you right in and warm you up.
  • Bamboráky: Crispy, golden-brown Czech potato pancakes, often served with a sprinkle of salt or sugar. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside, these savory or sweet treats are a delicious, hearty snack to enjoy at the Prague Christmas markets.

What to See at Prague Christmas Market

The most impressive Christmas tree you’ll ever see. Standing around 78 feet tall, it is chosen every year from the Liberec region through an annual contest. A daily tree lighting ceremony with music takes place daily. There are also live performances such as a children’s choir, folk dances in traditional costume, and music performed on the stage in the Old Town Square. Daily from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

To get a view of the whole thing, head to the Observation Bridge. It is usually packed with people, but will give you a great vantage point and the perfect photo op.

For another great winter experience, visit the open-air ice skating rink at Ovocný Trh, just a short walk from the market. It’s a great way to soak in the winter atmosphere while enjoying a classic seasonal activity.
