Hop On Hop Off Bus in Athens, Greece – Review

Hop On Hop Off Bus Athens, Greece

You may only get the chance to travel the world once, so getting able to see as much as you can, for as little as you can, is a great way to spend your time. In our experience, Hop On Hop Off Buses are a great travel hack. They’re the best way to see a city and learn something new, all for a great price.

What the HoHo Bus in Athens is Really Like

With only one day to explore the town, what better way to see it all than book a hop on hop off bus in Athens, Greece! (Locally known as the HoHo Bus). The pass was about 20 euro per person which gave us access to the double decker bus fully equipped with free wifi and an audio guide in multiple languages. You can choose between a 24 or 72 hour pass (they sometimes have promotions if you buy the 24 hour pass such as they will throw in an extra day for free, or free entry into a local attraction.)

The bus was clean, had air conditioning, and the driver was friendly and helpful. The top deck is the place to be. You can see everything and the breeze felt wonderful. Also you’ll get way better pictures this way! It did get pretty hot up there during the day so make sure you wear sunscreen and bring a hat.

Where Does it Stop?

The bus stops at the most popular Athens tourist spots. The most popular stops are Syntagma Square, Piraeus, Olympic Stadium, the Acropolis Museum, the National Archeological Museum, and the Beach-Riviera route. You can get on and off the bus at any of these stops as often as you like, or until the bus stops running at 5:00pm. The bus comes by every 15 minutes and you will get a map of the stops. You can also upgrade your pass which will give you access to more stops.

What’s Included in Your Ticket?

We purchased the 24 hour pass for 20 Euros which included unlimited trips during hours of operation, free Wifi, and a very informative audio guide which is available in 13 languages. Both electronic tickets and paper passes are accepted. The pass is valid for 12 months from the date chosen at the time of booking. We also were given a map with all of the bus routes and popular destinations.

What is the most Popular Stop?

During our experience, the most popular stop was the Acropolis Museum. We did not go into the museum during this trip, but we’ll definitely check it out next time!

From here you can hike up to the Acropolis, which is a 10 minute walk from the bus stop. It is not a difficult walk, but there is some uneven pathways and steps. Also, summertime in Greece can be very hot. Make sure you bring plenty of water and walking shoes!

On the way back down from the Acropolis, we passed the Theatre of Dionysus, which is still used for performances today!

In our personal opinion, the Beach Riviera stop was our favorite. It dropped us off directly in front of Paralia Edem Beach, which is the perfect spot for relaxing at the beach all day!

Is it Worth it?

I highly recommend the HoHo Bus for anyone traveling to Athens, no matter how long your stay. The audio guide was very informative and easy to hear,  and the bus routes are perfect for exploring the main points of the city. It is much cheaper than public transportation, and a nice way to beat the heat during the summer months. We will definitely get passes for this bus next time we visit!
