All About Dresden Christmas Market

Also known as The Striezelmarkt, Dresden Christmas Market is recognized as one of the first genuine Christmas Markets in the world. It was founded as a one-day market in 1434, but has since expanded and now lasts throughout the Advent season until Christmas Eve. Home to an impressive 240 stands, the Dresden Christmas Market attracts around 3 million visitors from all over the world annually!

In addition to its long history, the word Striezelmarkt originates from Strüzel or Stroczel, which referred to a type of cake traditionally sold at the market. Today, this cake is widely known as Stollen or Christstollen. It is comparable to fruit bread or cake, with different variations in fillings. The Dresden Stollen is exclusively produced in the city and is marked with a special seal to distinguish its authenticity.

Must-Try Eats at Dresden Christmas Market

The way I get to know a new country is through its food. By trying new dishes, indulging in local specialties, and witnessing the pride on the faces of those serving you, you experience something truly special. Visiting so many Christmas Markets throughout Europe gave our family countless opportunities to sample traditional and holiday foods. Believe me when I say that the Dresden Striezelmarkt offered the best food options around. Here’s what you need to try:

Champignons in Garlic Sauce

Even if you’re not a fan of mushrooms, this dish might convert you. The mushrooms are cooked in a flavorful sauce, topped with a creamy garlic sauce and fresh herbs. It’s absolutely amazing.

Bratwurst

Without a doubt, the sausage stands will draw you in with their irresistible aromas. Once you try one, you might find yourself going back for a second…or third. No judgement here.

Glühwein

This warm mulled wine perfectly embodies the season. It is aromatic, comforting, and impressively strong. The drinks are served in collector mugs, designed specifically for this market and marked with the year. You pay a deposit when ordering your drink, you can reclaim it by returning the mug. However, keeping the mug as a souvenir for just 4€ feels totally worth it!

Raclette

This Swiss cheese melts beautifully and is heated in front of a fire before being scraped over some sort of starch. Here, we enjoyed raclette over roasted tomatoes and thick bread. The result was rich, creamy, and delicious, with the tomatoes adding a delightful acidic pop.

Krappelchen

These are small fried donuts sprinkled with sugar. You can watch them being freshly made to order, and they’re served piping hot. Simple yet perfectly executed, they make for a cozy snack while exploring the market.

Stollen

This traditional German Christmas bread is typically filled with dried fruits, nuts, or marzipan and covered in powdered sugar. *These make for perfect gifts!

What to See at Dresden Christmas Market

There are numerous ways to enter Dresden Christmas Market. If you choose to arrive via Wilsdruffer Straße, you’ll pass beneath the iconic Christmas Arch, which symbolizes the mining history of the region. Not only is it large and intricately decorated, it is also adorned with strikingly large candles. You can climb to the top for a stunning view of the market. *After noticing this feature, I began seeing similar arches glowing in many windows throughout the night!

Additionally, the market boasts two enchanting carousels, which feel like a dream come to life. When purchasing your ride, you can pay at the booth using cash or credit cards, though it’s worth noting that cash is often preferred in Europe. Beyond the carousels, there are plenty of carnival-style rides available for children of all ages, making it a magical destination for families.

You will also find a wide array of local craftsmen offering unique gifts. These include handmade ornaments, children’s toys, home decor, and kitchen gadgets, among other treasures. Not only was everything crafted with remarkable quality, but the prices were also fair, adding to the charm of this extraordinary market experience.

Nearby Parking Options

There is a parking garage directly below Altmarkt. How convenient! We arrived in the early afternoon, so there was plenty of parking available, but I assume that it gets very full quite fast. There are a few other parking lots in the area, and there appeared to be little to no street parking. There are also train and bus stations located right next to the market, making it easy to reach the location without relying on a car.
