Kia Ora from Auckland, New Zealand!
Auckland, known as the “City of Sails,” is a vibrant mix of modern city life and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re stretching your legs along the harbor, geeking out over local history, or stuffing your face with amazing eats (hi, guilty), Auckland totally delivers. But I bet you didn’t know you could see the city…on a budget.
Planning a trip to Auckland? This guide covers what you need to know to explore Auckland, New Zealand on a budget—where to stay, what to do, and what to eat.

Getting to Auckland
We arrived at Auckland Airport after a short three-hour flight from Sydney, which is just about the shortest international flight you can get when visiting NZ! Unless you are coming from AUS, you will probably have a much longer flight. We arrived late, which meant the airport was quiet, making baggage claim a breeze. A quick cab ride later, we arrived at our stay for the next couple of nights, ready to take on the city.
Where to Stay in Auckland
Finding budget-friendly accommodations in Auckland can be tricky, but we lucked out with the Stadium Apartments Hotel (now called Nesuto Stadium). Located near the city center and harbor, this place was a gem.
For a little over $100 USD per night, we scored a spacious two-bedroom apartment with a full-sized kitchen, a cozy living room, a massive balcony, and even a washer and dryer—luxuries we rarely had on this trip around the world! If only we could have stayed longer than two nights.
Whether you’re a visiting backpacker or splurging on something luxe, Auckland New Zealand accommodations offer something for every traveler.
Here are some great options based on budget:
- Luxury: Park Hyatt Auckland—Waterfront views, world-class amenities, and top-tier dining.
- Mid-Range: M Social Auckland—A stylish hotel with a great central location.
- Budget: Bakers Lodge Auckland— A hostel option with clean rooms and a social vibe.

Exploring Auckland’s Food Scene
Wondering what to eat in Auckland? The city’s food scene blends fresh seafood, traditional Māori flavors, and international bites in a way that’s uniquely Kiwi. From bustling and wallet-friendly food markets and hole-in-the-wall cafes to fine coastal dining, there’s something here for everyone.
Breakfast & Coffee
In New Zealand, coffee is a big deal—and Auckland definitely delivers. We stumbled upon a great little café next to our hotel, where we enjoyed bagels and coffee in the crisp morning air.
Another top spot is The Coffee Club, where we had the best avocado toast and some ridiculously good loaded fries.
Lunch & Snacks
As we wandered down Queen Street, the city’s main shopping hub, we noticed how clean and modern everything was. Well-dressed locals bustled about, and high-end shops lined the street. After some window shopping, we headed towards the harbor for more exploring.
One thing that surprised us? The public bathrooms in Auckland. They looked like futuristic elevator doors with automatic sliding panels and self-cleaning interiors. New Zealand, you have nailed the bathroom game!
What to Eat in Auckland
Walking along Quay Street, we found a charming restaurant with a perfect view of the sunset. Though the menu offered kangaroo loin (which we couldn’t bring ourselves to try—but will next time), we indulged in drinks, appetizers, and one life-changing dessert: Pavlova.
The national dessert of New Zealand and also claimed by Australia. If you haven’t had Pavlova, you’re missing out! This airy meringue dessert, topped with light orange cream and fresh berry sauce, was heavenly. I may or may not have taken over 100 pictures of it.
Here are some must-try local foods in Auckland, New Zealand:
- Hāngi—A traditional Māori dish where meat and vegetables are slow-cooked underground, giving them a smoky, earthy flavor.
- Green-lipped mussels— A local delicacy, these giant mussels are unique to New Zealand and often served steamed with garlic and herbs.

Auckland Nightlife & Shopping
After dinner, we strolled through the city and admired the Sky Tower, glowing against the dark sky. The city was buzzing! The streets were packed, shops were open late, and restaurants had lines out the door.
Turns out, we had unknowingly arrived during New Zealand Fashion Week—and I was severely underdressed for the occasion.
