The Christmas Markets, or Vánoční trhy, in Prague, Czechia can be traced back to 1812, right in the Old Town Square. The markets are beautifully decorated and full of locally made goods and Christmas treats.
The main Christmas Markets are held at Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square, which is about a 5 minute walk from each other. The other markets in the area are located at Republic Square, Tyl’s Square, Peace Square, and Smichov. (The dates on these markets do differ). Every year the market has a different theme! They will announce the theme shortly before the market opens.

There is no shortage of food options here. Majority of the stalls are selling food. My kind of market! The food here is all locally sourced and made right in front of you. Here are some of the most popular, and most delicious items:
The most impressive Christmas tree you’ll ever see. Standing around 78 feet tall, it is chosen every year from the Liberec region through an annual contest. A daily tree lighting ceremony with music takes place daily. There are also live performances such as a children’s choir, folk dances in traditional costume, and music performed on the stage in the Old Town Square. Daily from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
To get a view of the whole thing, head to the Observation Bridge. It is usually packed with people, but will give you a great vantage point and the perfect photo op.
For another great winter experience, visit the open-air ice skating rink at Ovocný Trh, just a short walk from the market. It’s a great way to soak in the winter atmosphere while enjoying a classic seasonal activity.

With convenient public transportation, we reached the Christmas market in about 15–20 minutes, giving us the perfect balance of affordability and accessibility. You will see these ‘cable car style’ trams all throughout the city and most of them run from 5am to Midnight. 1000% yes! Everyone talks about the Christmas Markets in Germany, but what everyone should be talking about are the Christmas markets in Czechia. Everything here is so well done. Original and beautifully made gifts, perfectly cooked and seasoned food, strong mulled wine, exquisite holiday decor on every surface you see, and to top it all off – the stunning, dark architecture that engulfs you. Who knew a blend of a dark gothic atmosphere and bright festive decor could go so well together?!
